108dao (壹零捌道): A Modern Twist on Traditional and Innovative Dishes
Starters: A Refreshing Prelude
To kick off our meal, we ventured into new territory with some innovative appetizers. The “Red Wine Soaked Tomatoes” (38 RMB) were a revelation on a hot day—refreshing and slightly sweet, they made for a delightful start. We also tried the “Wrapped Mushrooms” (52 RMB), which featured a generous portion of mushrooms encased in a delicate flour skin, shaped like a pomegranate. This dish showcased the skill of the dim sum chef and was as pleasing to the eye as it was to the palate. Lastly, the chicken version of “Yu Sheng” offered a refreshing twist on a traditional dish, with cold steamed chicken mixed with crisp vegetables and a tangy dressing.
Main Course: A Symphony of Flavors
For our mains, we chose a mix of Beijing classics and new experiences. The highlight was undoubtedly the Peking Duck (128 RMB for half a bird). Unlike the Peking duck we’ve encountered in Southeast Asia, “108 lu” presented it with an array of condiments including sugar, sweet sauce, spring onion, and cucumber, each charged per person. The clever use of paper layers between each wrap made it easy to handle without tearing, and kept the plate clean from excess sauce. The duck skin, presented in an artful rose shape, was both visually stunning and delectably fragrant, thanks to the wood used in its preparation. Paired with a pot of Rose Tea, this dish was simply divine. Despite trying “Si Ji Ming Fu” the previous day, I found “108 dao”’s Peking duck to be superior in flavor and presentation.
Our other mains did not disappoint either. The Grilled Beef Ribs (398 RMB) were a standout with their perfect char and tenderness, served with cumin and mustard sauces that complemented the beef excellently. The Croaker Fish Soup (398 RMB) was equally impressive, with the chef cooking the fish in front of us. The fish slices were fresh and tender, and the broth was rich and flavorful. The addition of rice crackers provided an interesting textural contrast. However, the portion was quite large for our group of four, leaving us unable to finish it.
Final Thoughts about 108dao (壹零捌道)
In conclusion, 108Dao delivers an unforgettable experience in modern elegant dining in Beijing. With its perfect blend of tradition and innovation, the quality of dishes like the grilled beef ribs and croaker fish soup, despite their higher price, justifies the visit. For those seeking a dining adventure that combines modern ambiance with traditional flavors, 108Dao is an absolute must-visit destination in Beijing.
