Discover Beijing’s Best Hidden Gem for Theme Park Food

After a fun-filled morning at Universal Studios Beijing, our stomachs began to rumble, signaling it was time to explore the best Universal Studios Beijing dining options. Venturing outside the park for a much-needed lunch, we stumbled upon ‘Wai Po Jia’, a charming Chinese restaurant. Around 3 pm, the restaurant was surprisingly quiet, with only a few diners scattered around. Excited and ravenous, we quickly placed our order, eager to discover the culinary delights that make this spot a hidden gem near the theme park.

Our Feast @ Grandma’s House, Universal Studios Beijing (外婆家)

1. Steamed Chicken (68 RMB) The first dish to arrive was the steamed chicken. It was a delightful start, with tender and juicy meat complemented by a springy skin. The freshness of the chicken was evident, reminiscent of kampong chicken. Each bite was a testament to the perfect steaming technique.

2. Oyster Omelette (68 RMB) Next up was the oyster omelette. Unlike the typical fried versions found in Singapore and Southeast Asia, this omelette focused on the eggs’ goodness. The sizable oysters were perfectly cooked, achieving a balance between raw and cooked. The generous portion of oysters added to the dish’s appeal, making it a standout.

3. Tofu Soup (68 RMB) The tofu soup followed, offering a refreshing and flavorful broth. However, the tofu itself differed from the softer, silkier Japanese variety. This version had a rougher texture and a slight hint of sourness, which was an interesting twist but might not be for everyone.

4. Xiao Long Bao (38 RMB) The xiao long bao was another highlight. Each dumpling was packed with flavorful broth and a delightful surprise – prawn. The addition of prawns added a seafood sweetness, making these dumplings unique and delicious.

5. Braised Pork Belly (Dong Po Rou) (38 RMB) Lastly, we savored the signature braised pork belly. The balance between fats and lean meat was just right, and the meat was evenly braised. While it was tasty, we felt it might be slightly overrated for its price.
